Heat treatment and ISPM 15 standard
Many countries require wood packaging materials to be pre-heat-treated in accordance with the ISPM 15 standard to prevent the spread of wood pests.
According to the ISPM 15 standard:
- all wood packaging material (e.g., pallets, crates, bins) must be manufactured from heat-treated raw materials;
- the wood is heated to a minimum of 56°C for a duration of 30 minutes;;
- the packaging must be marked with an official compliance mark confirming that it has undergone heat treatment.
Packaging material complying with ISPM 15 standards is mandatory for shipments moving outside the European Union. Non-compliance can lead to serious issues, including the rejection and return of goods at the border, mandatory repacking, or the destruction of pallets in accordance with the regulations of the destination country’s authorities.
